There is a reason why the United States of America are considered “the land of endless possibilities”.
Year by year, a new success story proves that commitment and hard work do pay off. Moreover, many of the names you see on the board of great accomplishments are those of the immigrants. Let’s meet some of them!
1. Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google
The online world today would be completely different without Google, the most popular search engine so far. The company is also a leader in terms of innovation and a great place to work, from what we’ve heard. Sergey Brin was born in Moscow, Russia’s capital city. His family immigrated to the USA when he was just a six year old kid.
Computer science was his thing from an early age and he pursued his passion through school. While attending a Ph.D. program at Stanford, one of the world’s most prestigious universities, he met Larry Page. They dropped out and started Google together. He has an estate estimated at $24.4 billion.
2. Jerry Yang, founder of Yahoo
Yang’s story shows once again that ambition can overcome many barriers. He was born Taiwan and lost his father at the age of two. The rest of his family immigrated to California when Jerry was only eight.
He barely spoke English, but he didn’t let that stop him. He was an excellent student and eventually attended Stanford. Five years after graduating, he founded Yahoo, yet another internet giant. In 2012, he stepped down from the company, but has managed to gather an estimated net worth of $1.15 billion.
3. Jan Koum, co-founder of WhatsApp
This story is a raw expression of what it means to live out your dreams. Koum emigrated from Ukraine when he was 16 and has struggled for many years. Now, he is worth $6.8 billion, after Facebook bought WhatsApp for no less than $19 billion in cash and stock.
4. Elon Musk, founder of PayPal
Elon Musk has always had an eye for business and the USA was the right place for him. He sold his first company for $22 million and things just went up from there. He made a fortune after selling PayPal to Ebay and now he is the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors. He is originally from South Africa and became an American citizen in 2002.
5. George Soros
“The man who broke the bank of England” is one of the thirty richest people in the world. He was born and raised in a Jewish family, in Budapest, Hungary. He survived the German occupation and has managed to emigrate. Soros moved to New York in 1956 and has founded the most successful hedge fund in history.
In addition, we’ll mention just a few more names: Albert Einstein (Germany, physicist), Arnold Schwarzenegger (Austria, actor and Governor of California), Charlize Theron (South Africa, actress), Oscar de la Renta (fashion designer, the Dominican Republic). And the list could definitely go on.
