How long does the naturalization process take

The naturalization process comprises the steps involved in becoming a US citizen. The process starts with the filling of the Form N-400, Application for US Citizenship. If you are aged under 18 years, you would be required to fill and submit the Form N-600, Application for Certificate of Citizenship, instead of the Form N-400.

After filing for naturalization, it can take somewhere between 5-24 months or more for you to become a US citizen. The interview will be conducted during this period. You will have to appear in a citizenship test during which your English proficiency and knowledge of the US government and US history will be tested.

If your naturalization application is approved, there will be a swearing-in ceremony after 1-180 days, which will lead to granting you the naturalization certificate. It can take more time to hold your swearing-in ceremony, depending on the number of US citizenship applications the USCIS has received.

Since some USCIS processing centers get many applications, the processing time can be different for different candidates. For instance, if you have filed your application in a city like Washington, DC or New York, it will take longer for USCIS to process your application. If you have applied in a rural area, your application will be processed fairly quickly.

Meanwhile, the USCIS is working to restructure and modernize the naturalization processing, with the goal to reduce the processing time, so all application are processed within six months after being submitted. There will be a delay in processing your application if you have made a mistake in it. It can even come with an additional cost to you.

The good news is that you can apply for the naturalization online by filling and submitting the online Form N-400 and submitting the application fees. Be sure to submit the fees, as your application will not be processed without it.
