The J1 visa is a temporary exchange visa that allows all foreign post-secondary students to travel and temporarily work in the United States during summertime which is also their vacation period, through an approved program sponsor.
Basic J1 Visa Requirements
In order to qualify for a J1 visa for summer work and travel, each applicant must be currently registered in full-time, post-secondary education outside of the United States. He/she must have proficient English language skills. They also must be sponsored by an approved sponsoring organization and they may also need to meet additional specific requirements as determined by their sponsor.
All candidates that belong to a non-Visa Waiver Program country must arrange their employment in the United States through their sponsor before entering the US. Most typically jobs J1 visa applicants get involved in, are usually the in the internship and non-skilled work category such as working in hotels, resorts, and restaurants.
J1 Visa Entitlements
The J1 visa entitles each holder to travel and also engage in a temporary work in the United States during their summer vacation. A J1 visa for summer work and travel is usually granted for a maximum of four months. Then, after this period, students must return to their home country before the start date of college/university.
Spouses and unmarried children under 21 years of age are also eligible to apply for the applicable derivative visa (J2 visa) in order to join their spouse or parent in the United States.
