Why is renewal of the Green Card important

Foreign citizens who become a permanent resident of the United States get Green Card, which is a photo ID card that shows that you have a legal permanent resident status in the US. While your permanent resident status does not carry an expiry date, the Green Card does come with an expiration date. The Green Card is issued for a maximum period of 10 years, after which you must renew it.

When your Green Card expires, you can still be a legal permanent resident of the US, but it does not mean that you can skip renewing your card. It is compulsory for every permanent resident to renew the Green Card. In case you do not renew your card, it can land you in troubles. For example, you will find it hard to get a job in the US. Also, you will face difficulties in applying for a driving license and enjoying public benefits.

Furthermore, if you are overseas at the time of expiry of your Green Card, the immigration authorities may not allow you to return to the US. An expired card is rendered worthless, meaning that it does not carry any legal power. In such a case, you would be required to approach the US embassy or consulate in your country of residence and initiate the Green Card renewal process from there.

If your Green Card is about to expire in the next six months, you may apply for its renewal. You must apply for renewal of the card by filling and submitting the Form I-90 to the USCIS. Known as the Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, the Form I-90 can be found on the USCIS website. You can also fill out the form and send it to the USCIS through postal mail.

If you need more help regarding the renewal of your Green Card, you should visit the USCIS website or speak with an immigration attorney or consultant.
