What You Need To Know About Birthright Citizenship

Birthright CitizenshipFirst and foremost, birthright citizenship is a constitutional right.
According to the Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, “All persons born or naturalized in  the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”

Therefore,  U.S. citizenship is granted to anyone born within the U.S. borders (including the territories of Puerto Rico, the Marianas and the U.S.  Virgin Islands), regardless of whether their parents are U.S. citizens, legal residents, temporary visitors, or illegal aliens in the country.

The law also applies, with some exceptions, to children born outside the United States to U.S. citizens.
