According to a study from the Pew Charitable Trusts, these generate $2.8 billion each year and support 25,000 jobs for the U.S. economy.

The report shows that about two-thirds of those who visit public lands engage in non-motorized recreational activities, such as hiking, camping, fishing or hunting, so-called “quiet” activities. These activities offer plenty of local economic opportunities, especially for restaurants, groceries, and gas stations, and at the same time contribute with billions of dollars to the national economy.

In Arizona and other Western states, quiet visitors spent nearly $2 billion in 2014. Arizona alone welcomes 3.5 million visitors to its public lands each year. They spend on average $162 million and indirectly support 1,600 jobs. 12 million acres of public lands managed by the federal Bureau of Land Management, out of 246 million country-wide, are located in Arizona.
