U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services have awarded almost $10 million in grants to 46 organizations in 21 states that will assist permanent residents in their process of applying for U.S. citizenship. According to data from USCIC, there are approximately 8.8 million permanent residents eligible to be naturalized.

USCIS Citizenship and Integration Grant Program began in 2009 and has so far awarded $63 million to nonprofit organizations that help immigrants prepare for their naturalization application. Services include online resources, learning materials for the citizenship test, and information about the rights and responsibilities that come with U.S. citizenship. The program has helped more than 156,000 permanent residents prepare for citizenship and the new grants will help an additional 37,000 individuals by September 30, 2018.

According to USCIS officials, there is a great need for citizenship-related services throughout the country. The newly created grant opportunity will help public or private nonprofit organizations to expand their services and citizenship instruction programs so that more permanent residents can achieve their dream of becoming U.S. citizens.
