Not having strong English skills. All lectures and assignments in the U.S., not to mention the conversations with classmates, will be entirely in English. Some universities require candidates to take the TEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) before applying, while others do not give specific tests to verify the students’ proficiency. Either way, make sure you master the English language before arriving at the university. Otherwise, it will be almost impossible to keep up with the academic requirements.

Not researching the school’s location. The United States has various geographical characteristics and a climate that varies from desert-hot to Antarctica-cold. Therefore, make sure that the university you choose will match your degree of adaptability to the exterior environment. Moreover, some institutions function on a quiet and rather secluded campus, while others are in the middle of the action in large and buzzy cities. You should have this in mind and consider which type of student life you wish to experience.

Not counting all costs. School costs more than the tuition fee. Housing, food and other necessities, leisure activities, all these should be taken into account when you make a budget. You should also note that the cost of living varies from one location to another.
