The US will allow more immigrants from Central America

American Visa in the passport closeup. The U.S. government has just announced an expansion to an existing refugee program to allow more people from violent Central America countries to enter the United States. The program covers immigration from Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador.

Children under the age of 21, from any of these three countries, who have at least one parent living legally in the U.S., could already apply for refugee status under the Central American Minors program. The expansion of the program now includes more categories of eligible applicants, including older siblings, biological parents who accompany their child to the U.S., and caregivers related to the parent living in the U.S.

The conditions in these countries are some of the most violent and dangerous in the world and many people are trying to leave using a less legal path. The updated program represents recognition of these realities on behalf of the U.S. and an aid for those who have legitimate refugee claims.

Based on the Protection Transfer Arrangement, Costa Rica will serve as a temporary host for about 200 Central Americans in imminent danger before they arrive in the U.S.
