Refugees become similar to U.S.-born citizens over time

Refugees in USAAbout 3 million refugees have been admitted to the U.S. so far and studies have shown that they adapt quickly to the new environment. A recent report has found that in just 10 years, most refugees become in many regards similar to any U.S.-born citizen, especially in terms of labor participation and wages. During this time, they also learn to speak English very well.

Four major refugee groups, that is citizens from Somalia, Myanmar, Hmong, and Bosnia, make almost 500.000 U.S. residents, meaning a quarter of the total number of refugees in the country. According to a study focusing on these groups, refugees often receive substantial wage gains over time. For instance, recently arrived refugees from Myanmar earn on average $23,000 a year but their salary jumps to $54,000 in just a decade. Refugees also manage to ascend the occupational ladder. After 10 years of living in the U.S., 43 percent of the Somalis refugees work in white-collar jobs, compared to 23 percent of the newly arrived refugees.

Refugees are also good at establishing their own businesses. The study found that 31 out of every 1,000 Bosnian refugees in the labor force are business owners, the same share as among the U.S.-born people in the labor force.
