Over 40,000 refugees in the US so far this year

ID-10045657Migration is a historical phenomenon, but recent conflicts in the Middle East and Africa are driving a new wave of refugees seeking shelter in North America and Europe. According to the State Department’s Refugee Processing, the U.S. has welcomed more than 3 million refugees since 1975.

So far this year, over 40,000 refugees have been admitted in the country. The largest group, about 8,000, came from Myanmar. The Democratic Republic of Congo is the second country of origin, with roughly 6,300 refugees coming to the U.S. Almost 6,000 refugees came from Somalia and other 5,300 from Iraq. Bhutan, Syria, and Iran each accounts for about 2,000 refugees.

The origin of refugees in the U.S. has changed over the years. In the 1970s, more than 200,000 refugees, many of them from Vietnam and Cambodia, were granted asylum in the United States. In the 1990s, most refugees came from Europe, especially from the former Soviet Union. So far this year, only 5 percent of U.S. refugees are from the Old Continent.
