Labor hand on the USA FlagThe number of immigrant workers in the U.S. has more than tripled over the past four decades, according to an analysis from the Migration Policy Institute, based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Percentage wise, their share in the national labor force grew from 5 to 17 percent. In other words, one in every six workers is foreign-born. The report also found that over the same period of time the foreign-born share of the population grew from 4.7 percent to 13.3 percent.

There were roughly 25 million foreign-born employees aged 16 and older in 2014. Many of them, 30 percent, worked in management, professional or similar occupations. One quarter worked in service-related professions, 17 percent worked in sales and office occupations, 15 percent in transportation and production, while other 13 percent had various jobs in natural resource sectors, construction, and maintenance.

The same study shows that 1.3 million immigrants moved to the U.S. in 2014. That year, India was the top country of origin, with 147,500 citizens. China was second at that time with 131,800 incomers and Mexico was in third place with 130,000.
