A new lottery is about to come into action in the United States. New York officials have announced that the state will cover the application fee for U.S. citizenship for roughly 2,000 low-income immigrants. The winners of this financial aid will be selected by a lottery. NYS already waives the application fee for immigrants with extremely low incomes.
In order to apply for citizenship, foreign-born individuals need to pay a $680 fee, which is set to go up to $725.
With the new program, immigrants in New York who earn between $30,240 and $60,480 a year are eligible for the lottery. It is estimated that approximately 160,000 people fall into this category.
The money which will be used to cover the fees will come mostly from private donors, according to the official announcement.
The lottery is also sending a strong message, that is, that New York believes in diversity and that is welcomes immigrants into the community with open arms.
