Although there is a general opinion that immigration is good for the U.S. economy, the debate has always been focused on whether immigrant workers are stealing jobs from the Americans or not. Some economists have said that low-skilled foreigners steal jobs which low-skilled Americans would normally do, but several studies have contradicted this hypothesis.
The most recent report has been assembled by the Urban Institute, after studying 16 million American workers without high school diplomas. Expert Maria E. Enchautegui found that natives and foreign-born immigrants with the same level of education pursue very different jobs. Most of the low-skilled immigrant workers (465.056) are maids and housekeepers, whereas most Americans without a high school diploma (508.067) are cashiers. There are certain jobs, such as miscellaneous agricultural activities, which natives don’t even take on.
According to the same study, by 2022 the U.S. job market will add about 4 million new jobs that don’t require a high school degree.
