Los Angeles: Two Illegal Immigrants Are Appointed in City Commissions

Huntington Park is a small city in Los Angeles County, with a majority Latino population. Nothing peculiar so far. But what ensures this community a place in history books it’s the mayor’s unique decision to appoint two young and undocumented local immigrants to serve on city commissions. This is one of the very few situations where illegal immigrants have such an opportunity.

According to the law, unauthorized immigrants cannot vote nor be voted, and employers are not allowed to hire citizens without legal status in the U.S. Appointing the two immigrants in Huntington Park was possible because they both agreed to work as volunteers, therefore giving up a monthly payment of $25 to $75.

Julian Zatarain is a college student who came to the U.S. from Mexico when he was 13. Francisco Medina is now 29, and has been living in the U.S for the past 13 years, and even though they both came to the country as children, neither one of them was eligible to receive legal status under Obama’s deferred action.

According to Karina Macias, Huntington Park’s mayor, their experience and unique perspective will be of great help to the city.
