International students drive graduate enrollment in the U.S.

ID-100113804A recent report from the Council of Graduate Schools, which analyzes enrollment between 2004 and 2014 in the U.S., shows that first-time international enrollments at graduate schools increased by 11.2 percent between autumn 2013 and autumn 2014. Last year, there were 479.642 graduate enrollees in the United States, the highest number so far. Foreign scholars had much to say in this matter, because the increase of 9.4 percent in international student enrollments was able to counteract the 2.4 percent decrease from American or permanent residents students.

As for scholastic preferences, most international students go for STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). The most popular field of study was, last year, mathematics and computer sciences, with a 27.1 percent increase from 2013 to 2014. Engineering also saw a high increase. First-time enrollment for this subject has increased by 17 percent from the previous academic year.

Foreign students chose equally public and private universities, according to the report.
