Immigration contributed to 75 percent of U.S. population growth since 2000

United States. Population Concept.Immigration has counted for three-fourths of the U.S. population growth in the last 15 years, a recent report shows. According to this document, most of the immigrants who came to the country over the last decades are in the family categories. The number of spouses of American citizens, for instance, has gone up from 196.000 in 2000 to 415.000 this year. The number of parents of U.S. citizens has also increased, from 67.000 to 120.000 in the same period of time.

This trend can be observed since the 1970s, when foreign nationals started immigrating more on family basis. Over the last 30 years, family immigration has been responsible for 60 percent of total legal immigration, and in 2013 the proportion was 66 percent. In the 1970s, two million immigrants in the U.S. came to the country through different family-immigration programs. Over the next two decades, the number had extended to four million, and in the last ten years more than 6.5 million family-based immigrants came to the U.S.
