Immigrants are less likely to break the law, a new study says

39332280_sA new study from the University of Texas offers an interesting solution to reduce illegal behavior among teens: bring in more immigrant families. According to researchers from the university in Austin, teenage immigrants are less likely to commit illegalities than their U.S.-born compeers, whether it’s selling drugs, drinking alcohol or participate in criminal behavior.

The paper published by Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology also says that newcomers are more preoccupied by school and positive social and family activities rather activities that involve breaking the law. There is a reason why foreign-born teenagers, especially those who have recently entered the country, avoid this type of behavior. First of all, they have a lot to lose, including deportation. Secondly, they fear the repercussions of a foreign criminal justice system.

And there are numbers to confirm that immigrants don’t bring along violence and criminality. The number of unauthorized immigrants has gone from 3.5 million to 11.2 million between 1990 and 2013. Nevertheless, the violent crime rate has declined by 48 percent during the same period of time.
