Immigrant population in US expected to double

ID-100308500A new census from the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest released earlier this month shows that the number of immigrants in the U.S. could reach 78 million by 2060, a quarter of the current population. By 2060, the immigration wave will have increased 715 percent from 1960, the study indicates.

The report also analyzed data from the previous century and from the beginning of this century and has concluded that from 1880 to 1970, immigration in the US grew 40 percent. However, between 1920 and 1970 there was no growth in terms of immigration, and the foreign-born population already living in the country fell during that time.

If the current pace is maintained, the U.S. could add the population equivalent of 25 cities of the size of Los Angeles over the next fifty years. There are now 42.4 million foreign-born people living in the U.S.
