Hundreds of undocumented immigrants were arrested by the U.S federal immigration agents. The arrestments were made in four states only this week. The officials called this act a routine enforcement action.
This immigration sweeps has sparked many concerns among families and immigration advocates. Especially after President’s Trump executive order a couple of weeks ago to ban all refugees, even the green card holders born in one of seven major-Muslim countries. Even though this order is currently on hold by the Federal Judge, fear hasn’t gone away.
The states where this action took place this week were: Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and all their surrounding areas. According to Agents from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), they have only rounded the illegal immigrants who have committed crimes in their past.
Different activists from NY and Los Angeles are currently speaking against this immigration raid. According to David Martin, the director of the ICE in Los Angeles, these operations are not a response to President Donald Trump’s crackdown. He said: “This operation was in the planning stages before the administration came out with their current executive orders.”
Earlier this week, the Homeland Security Secretary, John Kelly, told the Congress that under the Obama administration, all agents of immigration constantly expressed frustration that they were not able to do their jobs and their overall morale was low. He also added: “I bet if you watch the morale issue, you’ll be surprised going forward.”
