The U.S. Department of State has announced that applicants for immigration to the United States should not wear eyeglasses in the photos they take for official documents such as the passport or visa application. The new measure is effective from November 1, 2016.

According to the U.S. authorities, applicants for U.S. visas and U.S. passports should remove their eyeglasses when taking these photos in order to avoid any delays in processing their applications. This policy will help the officers in the identification process and at the same time will strengthen the security of the application process.

There are certain circumstances when removing the eyeglasses is not mandatory. Applicants who have undertaken a recent medical procedure and are required to wear eyeglasses can keep them in the U.S. passport and the U.S. visa photos. In this case, they will need to submit a signed statement from an ophthalmologist or another medical professional to prove they cannot remove their eyeglasses without causing harm to the eyes.
