Cuban immigration surging to the US

34516693_sRoughly 500,000 Cuban-born immigrants have become legal U.S. residents through the 1966 Cuban Adjustment Act, which allows them to obtain a visa in only one year after entering the country. Although the U.S. officials have stated that there is no intention of changing the document in light of the new relations with Cuba, more Cubans than ever are now taking advantage of the law.

Most of the Cubans arrive in the U.S. via Mexico and enter the country through the Texas border. The number of Cubans who have registered with the Mexican immigration authorities before crossing the border to the U.S. this year is five times higher than last year. Moreover, in the past 12 months, more than 28,000 Cubans requested asylum in Texas, representing an 80% increase compared to the previous year. They also account for about two-thirds of those who entered the U.S. in 2014. The number of Cubans to travel by boat to South Florida has also increased.
