America celebrates Independence Day

ID-100113941On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress declared that the United States of America make a single and free nation, independent from the British Empire. Independence Day, also known as the Fourth of July or July Forth, is the U.S.’s most important holiday. People participate in parades, carnivals, concerts, fairs, baseball games or picnics. In addition to the publicly organized events, every family has its own way of celebrating. Most often, families gather around for barbecues, and fireworks are a must.

According to the National Retail Federation, U.S. citizens are expected to spend $6.8 billion on July 4, up 1.4 percent from last year. Each household will spend on average $370, mostly on food and drinks. Overall, Americans are estimated to buy 700 pounds of chicken, 150 million hot dogs, and 190 million pounds of beef. About $1 billion worth of beer is being drunk these days.

July 4 festivities usually end with spectacular fireworks.
