Adopting inclusive immigration reforms is beneficial

ID-10045657According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, U.S. states which have adopted an immigration-oriented legislation have seen improvements in economy, workforce, and education. By taking an inclusive approach to unauthorized immigrants, states can draw them into the mainstream economy, and as a consequence produce a win-win situation for both the incomers and state economies.

For instance, bringing undocumented immigrants to the mainstream economy would mean taxes and revenues which add up to the local budget. Furthermore, allowing foreign incomers to pay tuitions and obtain grants for attending public colleges and universities would increase their skills and create competent workers who can meet the employees’ demanding. In addition to all these, enforcing immigrant labor laws would result in fair and appropriate wages for foreign-born workers and local employees alike.

12 states in the U.S. have already passed laws so that undocumented immigrants can obtain a driver’s license, therefore not only allowing them to legally drive but also bringing in revenues from licensing fees. These include including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Vermont and Washington State.
