According to a personalized letter sent to President Trump and also to top Congressional leaders back on Wednesday, immigrants are a necessity for the US economy. There were nearly 1,500 economists who analyzed and pointed some of the economic benefits immigrants constantly bring to the United States and suggested the Congress to “modernize” the country’s immigration system as soon as possible.
According to the letter: “Immigration is one of America’s significant competitive advantages in the global economy. With the proper and necessary safeguards in place, immigration represents an opportunity rather than a threat to our economy and to American workers.”
Among the many benefits immigrants bring to the US economy, according to the economists, are also entrepreneurs who decide to start businesses and young workers who replace retiring Baby Boomer. Also, a big help comes from people with diverse and impressive skill sets to keep American companies competitive in some of the most high-growth fields like STEM.
This letter was signed by many economists from across the political spectrum, including Douglas Holtz-Eakin, who has served under President George H.W. Bush, and also Austan Goolsbee, the former chairman of President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers. “Immigration is not just a good thing. It’s a necessity.”- said Eakin, president of the right leaning American Action Forum think tank.
